Profile (003.001)
The evolution of Metavari's work in electronic music has defined the career of American composer Nathaniel David Utesch. The musician and Grammy nominated art director (Smashing Pumpkins, Phoebe Bridgers, Weezer, Korn, Jennifer Lopez, Underoath, etc.) has led the act across the edges of the genre for over a decade. Metavari is perhaps best known for their scores on Mondo and Light in the Attic—the industrial-tinged, synth-heavy rescoring of Fritz Lang’s ‘Metropolis,’ and ‘ABSURDA,’ the pioneering collection of dark and phosphorus music for the short films of David Lynch.
Metavari’s immersive art is a kaleidoscope of contemporary electronics fractured by kosmische, industrial and new age music. Brittle MIDI and material sound become a rhythmic spinal column for a work wrapped in dark, cinematic influences. Following the heartbreaking passing of founding member and bassist, Ty Brinneman, in 2020, the future of the project has been dedicated to his life and memory; “despite distance and season.” 2024 marks Metavari’s return to the stage as a trio—a multimedia event alongside new members Colin Boyd (drums, percussion) and Ian Skeans (guitars).
Metavari has seen seven collaborators and played over 400 shows in the US and Canada in its nine years of live performance. Metavari’s records are distributed worldwide through Joyful Noise Recordings, Light in the Attic Records, Mondo, and Deathwish, Inc.
